The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Selection in English Test Series Squad

The English team has chosen a 12-man squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise place.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s condition.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.

Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.

In those matches, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.

At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the more likely choice.

Spin Options Weighed

Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to provide some spin while also strengthening the lower order.

But the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
